I know I just made it seem like everything old is out and every new is great.

Memorize and internalize this quote from the ’90s book, The Articulate Executive:

Thirty years ago, this quote was true and thirty years later, it is EVEN MORE TRUE.

As a young lawyer back when this book was released, I still distinctly remember purchasing The Articulate Executive with some of my first dollars earned as a lawyer at Barnes & Noble hoping to learn the secrets of the corporate and business world.
It was a fairly mundane read to be honest, but one part of it stuck with me like a bad tattoo because of the somewhat shocking message.

Well, shocking to a young and naive lawyer at least…
I’m paraphrasing, but Toogood’s point was:
“It doesn’t matter how competent you are in your job if you don’t know how to speak competently. Even a five minute speech given expertly will make an impression on those who really matter, than a lifetime of work competently done, which those who matter will never know about. That person who speaks better than you could be completely incompetent, but his ability to speak will get him much further than your absolute merit.”
This passage had a shocking, yet profound and lasting impact on me.
And it should to you as well.
More than ever, your success in life, career, business, or whatever you want to do will depend on your ability to speak.

Not just speak, but speak BETTER THAN OTHERS.
